About Gwangju

Gwangju is located on the southwestern side of South Korea. It is the the sixth largest city in the country and has approximately 1.5 million residents. Gwangju became a metropolitan city in 1995. Before then, the city was part of Jeollanam-do (South Jeolla Province). Jeollanam-do is the birthplace of Kim Dae-jung, a former President of South Korea and a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000.
